Yeonggwang is the origin of Won-Buddhism.  Park Jung-bin, founder of Won-Buddhism, was born here and reached the stage of religious experience here.

Won-Buddhism is one of four national religion.  Holy places recognized by Won-Buddhism include Yeongsan in Yeonggwang where Park Jung-bin was born and founded religion, Iksan where the place of  education was opened, and Byeonsan where doctrine was drafted.
Yeongsan all over the Gilryong-ri district at Baeksu-eup, Yeonggwang-gun has Park Jung-bin's birth house, Sambatje Hill, Norumok Hill, and Bangeondap where many believers all over the nation visit every year.
