Prehistoric Age
(Bronze Age)
Presumed that the first residents settled in Yeonggwang in the Bronze Age due to the 600 dolmens distributed in Yeonggwang.
ThreeHanPeriod - Belonged to Mahan.
- Three tribes were formed around Yeonggwang-Eup, Yeomsan-Myeon, and Gunnam-Myeon.
Baekje Period - Musii-Gun, Gorokji-Hyeon, and Aro-Hyeon were established during the reign of King Geunchogo.
- Marananta of India introduced Buddhism to Baekje in 384 (the first year of King Chimryu’s reign) via Jinnae-Ri, Beopseong-Myeon, for the first time.
Unified Silla Period - Musii-gun was renamed Muryeong-gun in the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok’s reign.
- Governed by the Unified Silla from the 6th year of King Jinseong’s reign.
Goryeo Period Muryeong-Gun was renamed Yeonggwang-Gun in the 23rd year of King Taejo’s reign. Its jurisdiction included two Guns and eight Hyeons.
Jochang was installed in Buyongpo (presently known as Beopseongpo), according to the enforcement of the tax system in the 11th year of King Seongjong’s reign.
Jeonju was included in its jurisdiction according to the establishment of Jeolla-Do during King Hyeonjong’s reign.
Seongsan-eup Castle was built during King Munjong’s reign, and Buyongpo Buyongchang was renamed Beopseongpu Beopseongchang.
Joseon Period Belonged to Jeollanam-Do according to the enforcement of the 13-Do system in the 33rd year of King Gojong’s reign.
The Period of Japanese Imperialism Six Myeons, including Naedong, Oedong, and Sannam, were incorporated into Jangseong-Gun, and Nakwol and Wido in Jido-Gun were integrated in 1914. The jurisdiction included 12 Myeons.
Republic of Korea Freed from national disgrace on August 15, 1945. The government of the Republic of Korea was established on August 15, 1948.
June 1955 Yeonggwang-Myeon was elevated to Eup under Law No. 359. (1 Eup and 11 Myeons)
January 1963 Incorporated Wido-Myeon into Buan-Gun, Jeollabuk-Do: Law No. 1172
May 1967 The Anma Branch was established. (1 Eup, 10 Myeons, and 1 branch)
December 1980 Baecksu-Myeon was elevated to Baeksu-Eup (2 Eups and 9 Myeons): Executive Order No. 10055.
October 1985 Hongnong-Myeon was elevated to Hongnong-Eup (3 Eups and 8 Myeons): Executive Order No. 11772.
